Methods for producing monoenergetic neutrons

The experimenter needs a beam of monoenergetic neutrons. Installations for producing monoenergetic neutrons are an important part of neutron physical complexes.

One principle is based on wave properties, the other on the corpuscular properties of a neutron.

Time-of-flight method

The use of corpuscular properties implies a purely mechanical separation of particles by velocities v. In fact, at a given flight span L, the flight time t = L / v is separated (the so-called time-of-flight spectrometer): t = 72.3L · E-1/2, where L is in meters, E is in megaelectron-volts, t – in nanoseconds. Obviously, the time-of-flight technique requires the mandatory use of short neutron pulses, since otherwise the time of flight becomes indefinite. In fig. Figure 2.14 shows the appearance of the neutron time-of-flight spectrometer of the INR RAS.

If a continuous-spectrum neutron beam is incident on a plane surface of a crystal cut off parallel to one of the systems of planes with a distance d between them at a sliding angle ϕ (angle between the plane and the beam), then a beam is reflected at an angle equal to it from the surface, in which only such neutrons for which the Bragg-Wulf condition is satisfied

n is the order of reflection. In practice, only first-order reflection is used for monochromatization. This means that in the θ direction, where θ is the neutron scattering angle, measured from the initial direction of the beam, neutrons with energy
